Edwin Cole's father was Major Sion Spencer Read and his mother was Hardenia Jefferson Spencer. His paternal grandparents were Capt. John Nash Read and Elizabeth Julia Spencer. He had five brothers and a sister, named George Granville, Lycurgus, Charles William, Dr. Corin, Dr. John Thomas and Two daughters of Maj. Sion.-
