Martha's father was Ernst Albert Kappler and her mother was Maria Noack. Her paternal grandparents were Andreas Kappler and Agnes Groeschel; her maternal grandparents were Johann Noack and Anna Stiegner. She had five brothers and six sisters, named Andreas (Andrew), Edward, Otto Paul, Alfred Emil, Gustaf, Selma, Hulda P., Bertha A., Marie, Anna and Living.-
