Mackerness was born about 1819. Mackerness' father was Thomas Goode and his mother was Mary Barksdale. His paternal grandparents were Mackerness Goode and FNU Moseley; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Claiborne Barksdale and Jane Morton widow of Carter. He had a brother and two sisters, named Thomas Claiborne, M.D., Surgeon C.S.A., Mary J. and Minerva.General Notes
