Maud was born about 1251.  Maud's father was Maurice "The Resolute" De Berkeley and her mother was Isabella De Chiham.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas "The Observer" De Berkeley and Joan De Somery; her maternal grandparents were Maurice De Credonia and Isabel De Valence. She had four brothers named Maurice, Thomas "The Wise", 1st Lord, Robert and Simon.  She was the youngest of the five children.
