Melva Maxine's father was Charlie Russell Ivey and her mother was Ola Frances Baker. Her paternal grandparents were Henry F. Ivy and Cynthia P. Creason. She had five brothers and three sisters, named Bryan, Thomas Dennis, Vyron Doyle, Willard, William Charles, Alma Frances, Ouida and Claudia Evelyn.
