William was born in 1290 in Hainaut Province, Holland.  William's father was John II D'avenes and his mother was Philippa De Luxambourg.  His paternal grandparents were John I D'avenes and Adelaide De Holland; his maternal grandfather was Henry II De Luxambourg.  He was an only child.  He died at the age of 47 in 1337.
