Hugh was born about 1152 in Ryhale, Rutland, England. Hugh's father was Thurstan le Despenser and his mother was Unknown. His paternal grandparents were William Talvas Montgomery le Despenser and Alix (Ala) de Burgundy. He had a brother named Almaric. He was the younger of the two children. He died in 1199.-
