William was born about 1118 in Hanslape, Buckinghamshire.1   William's father was William de Mauduit and his mother was Maud de Hanslape.  His paternal grandparents were William de Mauduit and Hawyse (de Mauduit); his maternal grandfather was Robert de Hanslape.  He was an only child.  He died in 1170.1
