  Richard A. received his education in the common schools of Canada and
  worked with his father until the latters death, also continuing farming until
  1853 and coming to St. Croix Falls, Wis. the following year.
  In 1856 he bought 240 acres of land in the Township of Osceola, Wis., the
  place being covered with timber. He cleared the farm , broke the land, erected
  buildings and has since continued to carry on general farming with much
  success,raising small grains and stock. In 1862 he enlisted in the Union
  army, being mustered in at LaCross, Wis..,in January 1863, serving in F.
  company, Seventh Wisconsin Volunteers Infantry.
  
  He served with much credit and was mustered out in Baltimore, Md. in June
  1865, at the close of the war. His engagements included the battle of the
  Wilderness and many other bloody  battles.
