Peregrine was born in England.1 Peregrine's father was Henry Smith and his mother was Dorothy Cornish. His paternal grandparents were Erasmus Ambrose Smith and Margaret Cecil. He had a sister named Philippa. He had two half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Samuel, Noah, Dorothy, Joanna and Elizabeth.
