Ruth's father was Thomas Porter and her mother was Sarah Hart. Her maternal grandparents were Stephen Hart and Sarah Unknown. She had two brothers and seven sisters, named Thomas, Samuel, Sarah, Rachel, Mary, Dorothy, Elizabeth, Joannah and Martha.
