Lyman's father was Samuel Place and his mother was Marcy Tripp. His paternal grandparents were John Place and Lydia Wilcox; his maternal grandparents were Benjamin Tripp and Sarah Albro. He had two brothers and six sisters, named Benjamin, John Albro, Asenath, Deborah, Louisa, Lydia, Marcia and Sarah.-
