Luther was born on July 4th, 1776 in New Preston, Litchfield, CT.1 Luther's father was Gideon Morgan and his mother was Patience Cogswell. His paternal grandparents were Samuel Morgan and Rachel Kibbe; his maternal grandparents were Emerson Cogswell and Mary Welch Miles. He was an only child. Luther Morgan was listed as an ensign in the Augusta County, Virginia militia in 1797.
Luther Morgan was the fourth cousin of President John Quincy Adams, and thereby third cousin, once removed, to his father, President John Adams; fourth cousin of the poet Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. (and thereby fourth cousin once removed to his
son, Justice of the Supreme Court Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.); and fifth cousin of the writer and poet Ralph Waldo Emerson.
