Matilda was born on November 6th, 1837 in , Cape May, NJ.1 Matilda's father was David Gandy and her mother was Maria Bishop. Her paternal grandparents were David Gandy and Phebe Godfrey; her maternal grandparents were Gideon Bishop and Mary McCarty. She had four brothers and three sisters, named John Wesley, David, Gideon, John Wesley, Sara Jane, Emma and Lucy. She was the second oldest of the eight children.-
