John was born in 1732 in , Cumberland, NJ.1 John's father was Thomas Ewing and his mother was Mary Maskell. His paternal grandparents were Findley Ewing and Jane Porter; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Maskell and Mercy Stathem. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Maskell, Thomas, Joshua, Samuel, James, Mercy, Mary and Lydia. He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.-
