Josiah was born in 1729 in Windham, Windham, CT.1 Josiah's father was Seth Cary and his mother was Mary Hebard. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Cary and Mercy Bushnell. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Seth, Daniel, Moses, Mary, Elizabeth, Joanna, Abigail and Hannah. He was the fourth oldest of the nine children. He had a half-sister named Mary Porter.-
