The Mamikonids were "until the ninth century possibly the greatest princely
dynasty" in Armenia. They appeared for the first time in history in the first
century B.C. and could trace their ancestry back to Artavasde I, Grand
Constable of Armenia in 314. Several branches of the family became
Byzantinized, among whom were the Mosele-Krinite, possibly the "Macedonians"
and the family of St. Theodora, the wife of the Emperor Theophilos (842-56).
By the year 1000 the Mamikonids had lost most of their principalities, mainly
to the Bagratids, and retained only south western Taraun (with Arsamosata) and
Sasun. [Ref: Brook p20]
