"Hugh de Laci, who was employed in the conquest of Ireland, an d for his services there obtained from King Henry II., the whol e county of Meath. He was subsequently constituted governor of D ublin, and justice of Ireland. But incurring the displeasure o f his royal master by marrying without license the king of Conna ught's daughter, he was divested in 1181, of the custody of th e metropolis. In four years afterwards he was murdered by one Ma lvo Miadaich, a mean person, in revenge for the severity with wh ich he had treated the workmen employed by him in erecting the c astle of Lurhedy. He left issue: Walter, his successor; Hugh, co nstable of Ireland, who married Emeline, dau. and heir of Walte r de Ridelsford, by whom he left an only daughter and heiress, M aud de Lacy, who married Walter de Burgh; and Elayne, married t o Richard de Beaufo."
