JOHN BRADLEY
JOHN BRADLEY, ## 90, 112 on my lineage chart, was born ca 1495 in Lancaster Co., England during the reign of King Henry VII. Henry Vii had established good relations with other European countries--mostly by marrying his children to members of foreign families. His son, Henry /vIII married Catherine of Aragon, his brother's widow.
In 1485, Henry, a member of the Tudor family, killed Richard III of York and became King Henry Viii in 1509. At this time in history, England was an unimportant country. Christopher Columbus had discovered the New World in 1492.
Henry VIII was good-looking, had a hearty personality and was fond of the arts, eating, drinking, and hunting. Because Catherine could not give him any heirs, he decided to divorce Catherine of Aragon and marry a commoner, Anne Boleyn. Most of the church leaders went along with his ideas. He broke from the Roman Catholic Church and started the Anti-Catholic movement called the "Reformation" which spread across Europe. Thus the "Church of England" was formed. In less than three years, his wife, Ann Boleyn who gave birth to a daughter, Elizabeth, was beheaded on the charge of treason. He took on four more wives before he died in 1547.
So, John Bradley grew up during the reformation. He married and had a daughter, Elizabeth ( probably named for the Princess Elizabeth). She was born ca 1525. (John's wife and other children are unknown). John died in Lancaster Co.,England.
John's daughter, ELIZABETH BRADLEY, who married William Stone,I is my 13th great grandmother.
