Edith was born in 1848 in In or near Chapin, South Carolina.1 Edith's father was Levi Shealy and her mother was Mary Barbara Eargle. Her paternal grandparents were John Ventle Shealy and Eva Margaret Sease. She had a brother and eight sisters, named John E. Calhoun, Salinda, Louisa Malinda, Clara, Elizabeth, Laura A., Rothaltha Lucenda, Alpha Ann Aquilla and Mary Jane.-
