Robert Lide 
Robert was born on May 17th, 1734 in Roanoke, Virginia.1 Robert's father was John Lide and his mother was Sarah Duke. His paternal grandparents were Robert Lide and Elizabeth; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Duke and Elizabeth Marston. He had two brothers and a sister, named John, Thomas and Elizabeth. He died at the age of 67 on March 12th, 1802 in Hartsville, SC. He was buried in Lowther's Hill Cemetary, Mechanicsville, SC.1 General Notes
The ancestry of Maj. Robert Lide has been inccorectly reported for many
years. Records, including wills and land records confirm that the Majors'
parents were John Lide and Sarah Duke. Take a look at the report below and

1. Major Robert Lide, born May 17, 1734 in Manner Plantation, North side of
the Roanoke River, Bertie Co.,NC; died March 12, 1802 in Mechanicsville,
Darlington Co., SC. He was the son of 2. John Lide and 3. Sarah Duke. He
married (1) Prissale Fort June 24, 1754. She died June 24, 1754 in Cheraws
District, SC. He married (2) Sarah Kolb May 15, 1760. She was born September
26, 1736, and died September 24, 1789 in Darlington Co., SC. She was the
daughter of Johannes Kolb and Sarah. He married (3) Mary Westfield June 24,
1790 in Darlington Co., SC. She was born February 28, 1755, and died October
02, 1809 in Darlington County, South Carolina. She was the daughter of John
Westfield.
Notes for Major Robert Lide:
At the age of 26, his first marriage to Prissilla (?) (widow of Moses Fort)
ended in tragedy. The story as told in the book "A Family Called Fort" says
that Pricilla was wounded at her own wedding reception by a sniper's bullet
intended for Major Lide. She died only three days later. Four years after
that, Major Lide married secondly Sarah Kolb, who died in the fall of 1789
at the age of 54. The following summer at the age of 56 he married Mary
Westfield (widow of Mark Holloway).She died in 1809 at the age of 54. Major
Lide died at the age of 68 in1802(buried in the Lowther's Hill Cemetery) The
following story is quoted from the book "Ancestors And Kin" by Robert Walden
Coggeshall.
"Maj. Robert Lide was brought to the Pee Dee River area of South Carolina by
his maternal uncle John Crawford and settled on the west side of the river,
and later near Cashway Ferry, in what is now the Darlington District. He
served as Captain of the Northeast St. David's Parish Volunteer Company
during 1775, and later as Captain and Major in the Craven County Regiment of
Marion's Brigade. During the siege of Charles Town in the spring of 1780,
Major Lide had been hurried with a detachment from Pee Dee at the last
moment, for the relief of the beleaguered city; but, before reaching it, the
capitulation took place. His anxious wife (Sarah Kolb) was walking out (of
the house) when the news reached her of the sad reverse, and with a feeble
constitution already giving way under the burden of previous suspense,
she passed into a swoon, was born insensible into the house, and never
recovered from the shock. (She died nine years later). After the war he was
elected in 1785 as Commissioner of Caveats for the Cheraws District, and
appointed in 1785 as Justice Of The Peace for Darlington County. The first
1790 census lists him in the Cheraw District with 34 slaves. Mr. Lide was
converted from Anglicanism to the Baptist faith by Sarah Kolb."

Major Robert Lide

Robert Lide was born in Roanoke, Virginia May 17, 1734 and was the youngest
of three brothers. In 1740 the boys came to South Carolina with their uncle,
John Crawford, and settled on the west side of the large bend in the Pee Dee
River below Sugar Loaf, a well-known point. Robert Lide later settled near
Cashaway Ferry in what is now Darlington County, South Carolina.
Major Robert Lide was married three times. When he was 21, he married a
young widow, Mrs. Prissalie Fort, mother of a son by her first marriage. The
wedding took place September 12, 1755. At the reception, a sniping Tory
enemy hiding outside, aimed a bullet at the groom, missed, and fatally
wounded the bride. Nearly five years later, he married Sarah Kolb, a
daughter of Johannes Kolb of Mannheim, Germany, later of Germantown,
Pennsylvania. Robert and Sarah had seven children: John, Mary, Ann, Robert,
James, Hugh and Peter.
During the years of his marriage to Sarah, the War of the American
Revolution occurred. When the British Army came South, General Francis
Marion called on all the officers and militiamen of the Pee Dee area to
volunteer for service in a Brigade under his command. Capt. Robert Lide went
into the Brigade as a Major.. His brother was put in command of a regiment
as Colonel. Marion's Brigade rushed to defend Charleston after the fall of
Savannah. Before all the companies of militia reached Charleston, Major
Lide's command among them, that city fell to the British in May 1780. When
Major Lide's wife, Sarah heard the bad news, she fainted and never fully
recovered from the shock. Sarah died September 24, 1789 at 53 years of age.
On June 23, 1790 Major Lide married a third time, to Mary Westfield
Holloway, widow of Mark Holloway. To this marriage were born three children:
Sarah Ann Lide, John Westfield Lide, and Hannah Lide, who married Capt.
Thomas Edwards Hart, for whom Hartsville, South Carolina is named.
Major Lide owned much property. One of his interesting land transactions
took place on February 13, 1795. He sold 2,000 acres to a son-in-law, Robert
Hodges. This was the land on which the town of Mullins, South Carolina is
built. His sons Hugh and Peter signed the transaction as witnesses of the
transfer.
Major Lide was buried in Lowther's Hill cemetery at Mechanicsville, South
Carolina and on his
tombstone is inscribed: "Major of Militia in Revolutionary War of
Independence of the United States Deacon of the Baptist Church Many Years
May 17, 1734 - March 12, 1802"

known as Kalmia Gardens in Hartsville.
