Count Roger, Lord of the Honour of Lancaster [Ref: Watney #779]
lands between the Ribble and the Mersey, together with the district called
Amounderness north of the Ribble, were granted to Roger le Poitevin, fourth
son of Roger, Earl of Shrewsbury, bu William the Conqueror. Domesday book
states that these lands were in the king's hands, but ROger recovered them
early in Rufus's reign. He fixed his seat at Lancaster, but lost his estates
in 1102 when he aided his brother Robert of Belesme in rebellion. [Ref:
