Bernardo I's father was Oliva II Cabreta Count Of Cerdagne And Besalu and his mother was Ermengarda Of Ampuraias. His paternal grandparents were Maron Count Of Cerdagne and Ava; his maternal grandparents were Gausberto I Count Of Ampurias And Rosellon and Trudegarda. He was an only child.
