Marie was born about 1280 in Valenciennes, Nord, France. Marie's father was Jean II d'Avesnes and her mother was Philippa de Luxemburg. Her paternal grandparents were Jean I d'Avesnes and Adelaide de Holland; her maternal grandparents were Henry III de Luxemburg and Mathilde de Bar. She had a brother named Guillaume III. She was the older of the two children. She died on August 28th, 1354 in Murat Castle, Bourbonnois, France.-
