Viola May was born on September 4th, 1861 in Putnam Co., WV.  Viola May's father was John William West and her mother was Katherine Surbaugh.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas West and Mary ?.  She was an only child.  She died at the age of 94 on April 29th, 1956 in Charlottesville, VA.1
