Wharton's father was William Ransdell and his mother was Mary Chilton. His paternal grandfather was Wharton Ransdell; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Chilton and Jemima Cooke. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Chilton, Edward, Stephen, Thomas, William, Elizabeth, Mary, Sally and Ursula.-
