William was born on April 25th, 1836 in Dillwin, Buckingham Co., VA.  William's father was Zane Pryor and his mother was Elizabeth Patterson.  His paternal grandparents were David Pryor and Susan Ballew. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Charles David, John R., James, Eliza R., Susannah E., Mary Ann, Sarah Josephine and Edmonia Nicholas.  He was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
