Sarah E. was born in 1857. Sarah E.'s father was Thompson Payne and her mother was Susan R. Johnson. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Joseph Payne and Theodosia Bybee. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Leroy R., Thomas P., James F., Melvin W., Alice S., Theodosia and Edmonia. She was the third oldest of the eight children.-
