John F. was born in 1851 in Buckingham, VA. John F.'s father was John Frederick Miller and his mother was Louisa Catherine Guerrant. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Miller and Constance Massie. He had three brothers named Thomas, Heath J. and Daniel G.. He was the youngest of the four children. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named George Holman, Mary C. and Susan Brockenbrough.-
