James was born about 1803 in Prince Edward Co., Virginia. James' father was Paschal Greenhill Leigh and his mother was Elizabeth Archer Scott. His paternal grandparents were John Leigh and Elizabeth Greenhill; his maternal grandparents were James Scott and Elizabeth Osborne. He had three brothers and five sisters, named John Henry, William A., Paschal G., Elizabeth, Ann, (daughter), Agnes B. and Sarah Jane.-
