Richard was born about 1281. Richard's father was Henry Grey and his mother was Eleanor de Courtenay. His paternal grandparents were John de Grey and Lucy de Mohun; his maternal grandparents were Hugh Courtenay and Eleanor le Despencer. He was an only child.
