James was born in 1686 in Barnstable, Devonshire, England.  James' father was James Fontaine and his mother was Anne Elizabeth Boursiquot.  His paternal grandparents were James Fontaine and Elizabeth Thompson. He had three brothers and a sister, named Aaron, Peter, Francis and Mary Anne.  He was the oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 59 in October 1745 in Northumberland Co., VA.
