Anne Maria's father was William Colville Fitzhugh and her mother was Matilda Whittaker Helm. Her paternal grandparents were William Fitzhugh and Anna Taliaferro. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Camerone D., Champe S., Spencer, Sydnor Bailey, Betty Lewis, Mary Jackson, Matilda Taliaferro and Willie.
