Edmund's father was Eadgar and his mother was Aelthryth of Devonshire. His paternal grandparents were Eadmund I and Aelgifu; his maternal grandparents were Ordgar of Devon and Redburch. He had a brother named Aethelred II. He had a half-brother named Eadward II.
