Philip was born before 1798. Philip's father was Josiah Clay and his mother was Elizabeth Claiborne West. His paternal grandparents were William Clay and Ann Old; his maternal grandparents were Abraham West and Philadelphia Whitehead Lawson. He had a brother and a sister, named William H. and Ann M.. He was the oldest of the three children.-
