John was born in "Scotchtown", Hanover Co., VA.  John's father was Charles Chiswell and his mother was Esther ?.  He was an only child.  He died on October 15th, 1766 in Williamsburg, VA; committed suicide awaiting trial for killing Robert Rutledge during a quarrel.1
