Robert's father was Beverley Chew and his mother was Maria Theodora Duer. His paternal grandparents were John Chew and Ann Fox; his maternal grandparents were William Duer and Catherine Alexander. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Beverley, John William, Alexander Lafayette, Morris Robinson, Mary Virginia, Caroline, Katherine Alexander and Lucy A.. He died in infancy.-
