William was born about 1812 in Louisa, Louisa Co., VA.  William's father was David Armstrong and his mother was Frances Mitchell Pulliam.  His paternal grandparents were Launcelot Armstrong and Mary Bourne; his maternal grandparents were Zacharias Pulliam and Sarah Black. He had three brothers and a sister, named Price Overton, Joseph, Zachariah Pulliam and Evelina T..  He was the second oldest of the five children.  He died in 1856.
