"Stanfordville prior to 1814 was also called Devil's Half Acre, and was a place where gamblers, cock fighters and drunkards came to drink, race, gamble and fight chickens and each other." [Eatonton Messenger, 26 Jul 1960]
Military Service: Revolutionary War, North Caroline Line. Pension 27, November 1845; Served in Capt. Caswell's Company of Col. Brandon's 5th Regiment, North Carolina Line. Enlisted 15-16 Apr 1776, discharged 10 Nov 1778.
Moved c1788 to South Carolina, recorded in Edgefield district in the 1790 US Census. C. Cox received a land grant after the Revolutionary War in the amount of 464 acres in Edgefield in 1791. Relocated to Warren County, GA by 1795 and consequently, Putnam County, GA by 1807.
1830 Jones County US Census lists Carey Cox, Jr and two of his brothers-in-law (Asa Wall and Sion Hill) living near-by.
Carey Cox was a Primitive Baptist Minister, member of the William Creek Baptist Church, Warren County, GA.
Buried on the plantation of his son, Carey, Jr., which is now part of the Oconee National Forest, Putnam County, GA.
