Rhys was born in 1170 in Llandilo, Carmarthenshire, , Wales.¹ Rhys' father was *Rhys Ap Rhys and his mother was *Ellyw Verch Thomas. His paternal grandparents were Rhys Ap Gruffydd and Gwenllian Verch Madog; his maternal grandparents were Trahaearn Thomas Ap Gwgon and Gwenllian Verch Rhys. He was an only child. He died at the age of 74 in 1244 in Llandyfeisant, Carmarthenshire, , Wales.¹
