Ellen Lee was born on October 31st, 1859 in Lower Giesboro. Ellen Lee's father was Ignatius Fenwick Young Jr. and her mother was Eleanor Carroll Livingston. Her paternal grandparents were Ignatius Fenwick Young and Barbara Sim Smith; her maternal grandparents were Robert LeRoy Livingston and Anna Maria Digges. She had eight brothers and five sisters, named Livingston I., Fenwick R., Notely C., William Brent, Arthur D., Joseph N., Ignatius Fenwick, Jos. N., Eleanora M., Nora M., Agnes B., Amy and Clementina. She was the sixth oldest of the fourteen children.-
