    Now an exiled lord from the North, Ser Jorah earned his knighthood during Greyjoy’s Rebellion, being one of the first to enter the breach in the walls of Pyke during the last battle. Having won as a bride the daughter of a member of the ancient and powerful Hightower family, he soon fell into great debt trying to keep her happy on his rustic, isolated "Bear Iisland." 
    
    Breaking the laws of Westeros by selling poachers into slavery, he fled Lord Stark’s justice, selling his sword in the east until his wife abandoned him. Balding, burly, and bearded, Ser Jorah is as tough as they come. His father Jeor is Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch.
    
    Middle-aged but still strong and fit, Ser Jorah is a capable warrior. When he fled Westeros to escape execution, Ser Jorah entered the service of the last Targaryens, exiled Prince Viserys and Princess Daenerys.  Viserys Targaryen had noticed Ser Jorah at the party celebrating the engagement of his sister to Khal Drogo, and he took Ser Jorah into his service.
    
    Jorah, hoping for a royal pardon, became a spy for the Iron Throne, reporting all of the Targaryens' movements to Varys, King Robert's spymaster. However, he fell in love with Daenerys and eventually ceased his reports.  Ser Jorah has proclaimed his love repeatedly and suggested to Daenerys that they marry, claiming she would never find a man more loyal than he.
    
    Daenerys, who saw him as more of a father figure, always refused. Jorah's earlier betrayal of the Targaryens was revealed by Barristan Selmy, and Daenerys sent both on a dangerous mission to prove their loyalty after past deceits. After compelting the mission, Selmy was contrite and humble, and was pardoned. Though Mormont's betrayals were more significant, he was bitter and proud. He was not forgiven, and was banished from her service.
