Robert was born in 1822 in Brightwell, Berkshire, England. Robert's father was John Castell and his mother was Ann Smith. His paternal grandparents were William Castell and Mary Gregory; his maternal grandparents were Charles Smith and Elizabeth (Mother). He had five brothers and three sisters, named William, John, George, Charles , Gabriel, Ann, Mary and Elizabeth. He was the second youngest of the nine children.-
