Martha was born in 1866 in Brightwell, Berkshire, England. Martha's father was Robert Collins Castell and her mother was Ann Ellaway. Her paternal grandparents were George Castell and Sarah Collins. She had four brothers and six sisters, named William, John, Albert Harry, Charles Robert, Kate, Emma, Elizabeth, Kate, Constance Mary and Edith Amy. She was the second oldest of the eleven children.-
