Ján was born on May 21st, 1818.  Ján's father was Ján Lukáč and his mother was Katarína Sllovák.  His maternal grandparents were Michal Sllovák and Anna Dostálková. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Lukáč, Ján, Pavol, Michal, Mária, Barbora, Alžbeta  and Katarína.  He was the youngest of the nine children.
