Matthys was born in 1690 and his christening took place on June 4th, 1690 in Cape Town, South Africa. Matthys' father was Joost Strydom and his mother was Maryntjie Strydom (Ras).  His maternal grandparents were Hans Ras and Angelina Catharina Michiels (Ustings).  He was an only child.  He died at the age of 47 in 1737 in Cape Province, South Africa.
