Theodorus was born on April 7th, 1726 in Stellenbosch, Cape Of Good Hope, South Africa and his baptism took place on April 7th, 1726.  Theodorus' father was Johannes Potgieter and his mother was Maria Catharina van Eeden. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Jan, Frederik, Hermanus Lambertus, Hester, Amerentia and Maria Johanna.  He was the third youngest of the seven children. He had three half-sisters named Johanna, Elizabeth and Isabella.
