Matthys was born in 1708 in Cape Province, South Africa and his christening took place on July 1st, 1708 in Stellenbosch, Cape Of Good Hope, South Africa.  Matthys' father was Johann Lorenz Rostock and his mother was Anna Elisabeth Michiels.  His maternal grandparents were Mathhys Michiels and Angelina Catharina Michiels (Ustings). He had two brothers and two sisters, named Hans, Claas, Anna and Maria.  He was the third oldest of the five children.
