Herman was born on February 17th, 1814 in Clausthal, Hannover, Niedersachsen, Germany.  Herman's father was Conrad Carl Friedrich Koch and his mother was Auguste Louise Christine Meine.  His paternal grandparents were Johann Wilhelm Koch and Henriette Juliane Herold; his maternal grandparents were George Justus Meine and Johanne Wiese. He had four sisters named Bertha, Johanne, Johanne Willhelmine and Jeanette Wilhelmine.  He was the oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 63 on April 6th, 1877 in Clausthal, Hannover, Niedersachsen, Germany.
