Thomas was born in 1718 in Craven, North Carolina, United States.  Thomas' father was Richard Willis and his mother was Martha Vines.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Willis and Ann Griggs; his maternal grandparents were Samuel Vines and Martha Jones. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Samuel, John, Joseph Rev, James, Samuel, Martha and Elizabeth.  He was the seventh oldest of the eight children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named John, Joseph and Elizabeth.  He died at the age of 76 on December 5th, 1794 in Craven, North Carolina, United States.
